fiber
I spend a lot of my time working with fiber. I work with both unprocessed, raw fleece,
and also combed top or roving from very respectable fiber sources. I use local wool
when I can, because it is important that I support local farmers. And besides, who
doesn't want to make a trip to a farm and meet the lovely sheep or alpaca who are
helping support our fiber habits?
Working with wool can sometimes be a very long process. I wash fleeces, dye locks and
roving, and card up squooshy batts full of color and texture. My favorite wool to work
with is merino, simply because it is wonderfully soft and squishy, and it is a lovely fiber
to dye, card, and spin. Other fibers that are frequently used in my studio include BFL,
corriedale, romney, alpaca, tussah silk, tencel, bamboo, firestar, silk, and angelina. I
am rather selective in my fiber choices, because I think it's very important
to not workanything that's scratchy or full of vegetable matter.
I love to do custom orders, so if you ever have any ideas for batts or roving that
you'd like to have made, send me an email: mary@marajanecreations.com. I'd be
very happy to work with you and spread the fiber love.
